Arthur V Strother (Sonny), 79, of Providence, RI, passed away on August 11, 2025, at Hope Hospice in Providence, RI.
Arthur attended Central High School and Johnson & Wales University on a GI Bill after serving in the U.S. Army. He worked for Ervin Fain, who integrated housing in Providence, RI, for some years thereafter, he worked as a Telephone Communications Technician for AT&T and retired after 34 years of service. Arthur served as a commissioner at the Providence Civic Center for 4 years and 34 years on the Providence Zoning Board of Review, where he was known as the historian board member. Arthur also served on the board of the OIC, was a member of the Marathon Club and the President of the South Providence Crime Watch.
Arthur’s political interest included serving as the campaign manager for Councilman Thomas O’Connor and Representative and Senator Harold M. Metts.
Arthur had a passion for Radios such as CB and HAM, his handle was Alpha Romeo Tango (ART), He would correspond with enthusiasts like him all over the world, He was an excellent custom van builder, carpenter, landscaper and furniture builder. Sonny was a Jack of all trades and a master at all of them. His family called him MacGyver, because he could fix anything. Many young men and women in the community looked up to him as a role model and a second dad. He loved taking pictures, videos and going fishing.
Arthur is survived by his wife, Geraldine D. (Dias) Strother and his three children Gregory J. Strother, Arthur V, Strother Jr, and Heather M. Strother. He is also survived by his sister Diane Holland of Providence, RI, Cheryl Jackson of CT and Daniel Strother of East Providence, RI,.
Arthur leaves behind his beloved grandchildren; Jayda S. Strother, Gregory J. Strother Jr., all of Providence RI, and a niece Adrienne Smith of CT. He also leaves behind many nieces, nephews and cousins who will miss him dearly.
He was predeceased by his Brothers, Thomas Strother, Oscar Strother, Godfrey Brown all of Providence, RI and his mother, Rachel B.(Crump) Babbs and Stepfather Levert Babbs of Providence, RI.
