Samuel Corry Obituary

Samuel Corry, 94, of Providence transitioned to his heavenly Father’s home on Thursday, August 1, 2024. He was the husband of the late Brittie Blondell (Word) Corry of Kansas City, Missouri. He was born on November 1,1929 in Shelby, North Carolina, the son of the late David Corry and Geneva (Camp) Corry. Samuel, along with his family, moved to Rhode Island in 1949.  He attended Hope High School.

Samuel was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers David Corry and Emmett Curry, one sister Cora Brown, and his beloved granddaughter Brittie Mangum Taylor. Samuel was a loving and devoted husband and father. He is survived by two loving sons Allen Corry and his wife (Karen) of Keller, Texas, Larry Corry of Cranston, Rhode Island; and one daughter Dorothy Thomas of Cranston, Rhode Island. He also leaves six grandchildren, 20 great-grandchildren, many nephews, nieces, grand and great-nephews and nieces, and a host of relatives and friends to mourn his loss.

He was employed as a casting molder at the Stillman-White Foundry for 38 years before his retirement.  While an employee at Stillman-White, Samuel began his own trucking business, Corry Trucking Company.  He was known throughout the State of Rhode Island as an honest and dependable businessman who stood by his word and lived by his motto: “Treat people the way you want to be treated.”

Samuel was an outstanding baseball player and was a member of the first Black Baseball Team in Rhode Island.  He was also an avid bowler for over 60 years. His primary passion, however, was in Body Building and Weightlifting where he truly excelled. He was featured in the Strength and Health Magazine in 1952.

Most important to Samuel was his love for Jesus Christ and the church.  He was an active member of the Allen A.M.E. Church and served on numerous ministries within the church including the Pastor’s Stewards Ministry and the Men’s Choir.  He loved his church and his church family and made himself available wherever he was needed. Because he understood what God can do when one is faithful, he never went on vacation without leaving his tithe at the church before his departure. It can be said that Brother Samuel Corry was a generous and selfless person.

In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Allen A.M.E. Church in his memory.
